Friday, December 13, was a lucky day for some South Kitsap teachers and teacher groups as they were surprised by the Kurt Wagner Education Fund crew with checks for their grant requests. The group honors the memory of Dr. Kurt Wagner, former South Kitsap educator, principal, and deputy superintendent.

There were thirty-seven applications, all with worthy ideas, which made the decisions by the committee very difficult. Twenty-five grants were funded this year encompassing fourteen different schools.

South Kitsap High School: Greg Pickard, Sean Banks, Jenni Duggan, Barbara Zawlocki/Joel Houston.

Discovery: Parminder Tolpa.

Marcus Whitman: Sharon Hunter. John Sedgwick: Anna Crabtree/Candace Tetz, Katherine Wein.

Cedar Heights: Danyell Laughlin/Josh Morton, Kristen Klein/special education.

South Colby: Autumn McArthur, Courtney Vetter/Amanda Nesseth, Donna Hollon/Tracy Hickle/Kolby Fenton.

Orchard Heights: Clara Binington, Vicki Voorhees/Sherri Stevens-Rushing, Mark Leshley, Laurie Geary/Tracy Hopkins.

Olalla: Lesley Niemi. Mullenix Ridge: Cherish Wadley. Manchester: Sharon Vetter, Lyndsey Saltvick.

Hidden Creek: Andee Spehar.

Burley Glenwood: Jennifer Uniszkiewicz.

East Port Orchard: Heather Hamilton.

The KWEF not only awards teacher grants, it provides South Kitsap High School and Discovery High School student scholarships, elementary arts/music program support, and high school athletic support. The Kurt Wagner Education Fund has awarded over $73,000 the last seven years.
